Bilal Sayeed Oliver grew up in Philadelphia, the son of a devout Christian mother and Muslim father. Classically trained at New York's Mannes Music Conservatory (he can reportedly sing opera in seven languages), Bilal's musical passions range from Jelly Roll Morton to Prince.

The young singer moved to Brooklyn in the late '90s where he was discovered by Erykah Badu, who asked him to appear on her Mama's Gun album. Bilal also hooked up with Common on his Like Water for Chocolate CD.

Bilal's debut, 1st Born Second, was released in summer 2001 on Interscope---Rolling Stone
